The Reset Breath provides a quick, effective way to focus your attention on the communication going on within the body that allows the body to notice, PAUSE, notice again, reset and self-adjust simply by bringing awareness to the EXHALE.
The recognition of the human body’s ability to self-regulate, balance and create its own healing, along with the knowledge that occasionally it needs some gentle assistance to guide it into action, is the basis for the simple “hand positioning” to Self-adjust and complete the circuit to invite the body to disengage from external stimuli and synchronize with its own internal rhythm.
The Reset Breath(c)…what it is and how does it work? I am taking this opportunity to provide additional clarity on its purpose and address some of the science behind it.
In March, 2012, Andrew Weil posted a video on youtube that I feel clearly shows “Why Breathwork Matters.” He gives many reasons that how we breathe and why we breathe has impact on our health and well-being on all levels. Breathwork bridges between our conscious and unconscious and, when practiced over time, can return our breathing to its original autonomic function, the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic. He states the significance of breath work is to impact the sympathetic/parasympathetic system. And remember, this was recorded in 2012 and remains a significant bit of information. I would invite you to take a look and listen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SclZwqr5xpE
The Reset Breath was introduced publicly into the Quiet Miracles program in 1994.. At that time, there was no real science that could prove it worked…those of us who were experiencing and using it just knew that it did. In order to change any pattern, it is necessary to first signal/alert the body/brain that a change is coming. The Reset Breath not only sends that signal/alert, it also reminds the body/brain to move in resonance/rhythm with ALL systems. The Reset Breath provides a quick, effective way to focus your attention on the communication going on within the body that allows the body to notice, PAUSE, notice again, reset and self-adjust simply by bringing awareness to the EXHALE. Sounds like a lot going on and yet it all happens within a nano-second. That is the way our original design was created. When we first experience life, it is with a quick inhale to fill the lungs with life...followed by the exhale which sets our life cycle in motion. As we became entrained to outside influences, we began to rely more on what we were being told, shown and thought we knew. We now know that this information was, often times, providing inaccurate information. As we learned more about how our body systems work together, we began to understand just how true that statement is. More on the “predictive brain” later.
Many breathwork practices have certain counts to begin to bring the in-breath and out-breath into a more resonant balance. That function is to give an opportunity to return to our individual, natural rhythm. While that practice requires that we commit to a time and place to begin, The Reset Breath simply requires that you continue to live in the ever-changing vibration fields that you already move in…and asks that you do it with conscious awareness. That simply means you are aware of your surroundings as you move through your day. Each time you find yourself sensing or noticing something that distracts your focus, you simply PAUSE and RESET. With practice, the behavior changes and the reset will occur naturally and organically. That is, after all, how we were originally designed. Just look at the ability of animals to sense change long before it arrives. Our awareness of movement allows us to do the same. The Reset Breath communicates vibrationally with our internal body communication system, using all the advancements and enhancements that have been developed over the many years of our human evolution. It works with our conscious and subconscious accessing information to relay the information to determine what, if any action is necessary. The vagus system, or ventral vagus complex, provides insight into the importance of listening to our “gut feelings” that are often times ignored. It’s sensory capabilities monitor both the external environment within which we move and the internal body systems to support our movement. To learn more about how that works, take a look. https://www.lumennatura.com/2013/05/03/vagus-nerve-embryology-development/
WHAT IS HAPPENING PHYSICALLY?
Let’s look at some of the ways our intention and behavior affect/effect how our body works with our breath.
· Notice how your body responds when you take a deep breath or are asked by someone to take a deep breath.
· Where are your thoughts as you take that breath? Are you feeling threatened and preparing to run? Do you feel anxious? Do you feel you are relaxed but notice that your shoulders have moved up to your ears? Is your monkey mind chattering away? Did you notice tightness in your chest or were you able to breath fully into the diaphragm without discomfort or strain?
· Next, exhale through your mouth. What do you NOTICE? Where are your shoulders? Did your environment change or did your response to the breath change?
· You have had an opportunity to experience the PAUSE, some refer to as the stillpoint...the moment between the in-breath and the out-breath...believed by many to be the moment that the human body is locked in resonance with itself. Scientist Itzhak Benton believes that during this time, the body creates a wave form of approximately 7.8 cycles per second. Could this be the moment when we are connected to all that is?
· When sharing this with others, it is important to first tell them how it is done, then show them how you do it, then ask them to do it with you. This three-part-sequence is essential to engage the senses and engage memory.
Our intention, as you take any action, determines the reality that unfolds. However, more often than not, our intention is based upon a mental construct. That means we already have determined (predicted) several scenarios based upon our experiences in the past, our emotional memory around the experience rather than the signal being sent from the multi-sensory body system. Remember, the primary function of the vagus system is to constantly monitor, evaluate and send multi-sensory information about what is taking place within the environment around us and within the body communication/routing system. When we are taking action based upon those signals and when those signals have been clearly communicated and received by all systems, we either take action and run/sympathetic or PAUSE/stand down, using focus and discernment before taking action/parasympathetic. The Reset Breath is a simple and quick way to assess each situation consciously rather than allowing past behavior to determine our next move. We will move deeper into our predictive brain and how our perceptions are created that determine the action/non-action taken.
When we change our understanding of why we are doing breathwork and simply use the breathwork as a tool for bringing resonance to our experience, we can move from the mental construct to one of full participation to assure that our experiences have sustainability. This does not mean that we have to change doing the practices we love…it simply means that we have a way to prepare the physical to receive fully the support tools we are using…in resonance with all. When both mind and body are working in concert with one another, we move as The Sixth Element... Divine Intelligence moving within our Human Form. Our perceptual threshold shifts to the greater perspective. That is, after all, why we are here…
In addition to the Reset Breath, we also have an opportunity to connect the three brain systems with the use of Quiet Touch...we bridge the circuit. Dr. Henry Puharich discovered that “when a healer, with the intent to heal, brings his hands close to, but not touching the healer, the brain waves of the healer comes into resonance within seconds, showing a peak power spectrum of 8Hz.” Since this quote is from a time quite awhile ago, we now have more current data and recognize that it is a true statement that merits out attention. Our personal engagement and participation in our own healing, in support of the assistance of others creates a collaborative effort that holds a resonant field. Quiet Touch, much like the Reset Breath is always within YOUR reach...a comforting and healing touch that we can give ourselves. You will experience the many ways that we might assist to increase the calming hormone, oxytocin. Another benefit is the bridging of the ancient chakra system and our human routing system.
The next step in the process is our 18” Personal Signature. It is our True North...the tangible connection with HOME. Once again, I will invite you to return to the innocence and curiosity of a child experiencing something for the first time. Allow your imagination to take you to a new level of awareness. The experientials you will engage will open a recognition of the electromagnetic field of vibrational movement that is both internal and external...opening an opportunity to experience how you move within the greater field of experience.
